Exploring the Main Types of Industrial Endoscopes and Their Applications Across Industries



In the rapidly evolving field of non-destructive testing (NDT), industrial endoscopes have become indispensable tools due to their intuitive visual inspection capabilities, non-invasive operation, and high diagnostic accuracy. Although terms like automotive endoscopes, law enforcement endoscopes, or wind turbine endoscopes are commonly used in the market, these are names derived from application scenarios rather than strict technical classifications. The three core types of industrial endoscopes include: optical rigid endoscopes, fiber optic endoscopes, and video endoscopes.

The optical rigid endoscope utilizes a series of precision optical lenses to deliver high-fidelity images. It is especially effective for straight-line inspection paths such as the internal defect detection of casting deep holes. These instruments generally have probe diameters ranging from 1.7 mm to 10 mm and offer excellent image clarity for simple, direct-access applications.

The fiber optic endoscope, on the other hand, uses a coherent fiber bundle to transmit the image. While its resolution is slightly lower than that of rigid optical endoscopes, it offers flexibility in navigation, allowing it to bend through curved structures. With diameters ranging from 0.4 mm to 12.7 mm, it is ideal for narrow or complex inspection environments where straight-line access is not possible.

The video endoscope, which uses a CMOS or CCD image sensor at the tip of the probe, represents the most advanced form of industrial endoscopy. It provides digital imaging, real-time video feedback, and supports features such as image capture, storage, and data integration. With diameters typically ranging from 2.2 mm to 8.4 mm, video endoscopes are widely favored for their efficiency, image quality, and adaptability in industrial digital inspection workflows.

Beyond small-diameter devices, there are also large-bore inspection systems designed for infrastructure and pipeline applications. These include pipeline inspection cameras, PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) camera systems, and pipeline crawling robots.

Pipeline endoscopes use push-rod cables (typically 30–60 meters in length) to advance a camera into pipelines ranging from 60 mm to 300 mm in diameter, offering clear visual detection in sewer systems, industrial drainage lines, and underground conduits.

PTZ inspection systems allow remote-controlled rotation and zooming of the camera head, making them suitable for pipelines or vessels with diameters between 76 mm and 140 mm. The cameras can rotate horizontally and vertically, often with zoom capabilities exceeding 100x, enabling comprehensive surface examination.

Pipeline crawler robots are advanced inspection tools consisting of a mobile trolley equipped with a camera, a control console, and a cable reel. These systems can traverse up to 200 meters within pipelines, overcoming bends and minor obstructions. They are ideal for inspecting pipes with inner diameters ranging from 100 mm to 1500 mm, making them suitable for large-scale municipal and industrial projects.

Each type of industrial endoscope has unique strengths in terms of imaging principle, flexibility, inspection diameter, and operating depth. Together, they offer comprehensive solutions for internal visual inspection across a wide range of industrial environments, from high-voltage power equipment to precision aerospace components and deep urban pipeline networks.
